Why 38 matches

The Premier League has 20 clubs, and every club plays the other 19 twice — once at home, once away. That is 38 matches per club per season, the same structure used in La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1.

A perfect Premier League season would therefore mean 38 wins from 38 games: 114 points, a 100% record, every away trip conquered. It has never happened, and it is not close to happening.

The best Premier League seasons ever

Arsenal 2003-04 remains the gold standard. The Invincibles went the entire 38-match campaign unbeaten — 26 wins and 12 draws — becoming the first top-flight team since Preston North End in 1888-89 to finish a season without a loss. Their 90 points came with attacking football that defined an era.

Manchester City raised the points ceiling. In 2017-18 they recorded 100 points with 32 wins, 4 draws and just 2 defeats, breaking the records for points, goals (106) and winning margin (19). The 2018-19 title race with Liverpool produced a record 97-point haul for a runner-up, and City's 2022-23 treble season added a third consecutive title.

None of these teams won all 38. The closest in terms of wins is City's 32, and even the Invincibles' unbeaten run came with 12 dropped points. The gap between the best season in history and a true 38-0 is enormous — which is why the challenge is fascinating.
