The Invincibles era

The most famous unbeaten season in modern football is Arsenal 2003-04. Under Arsène Wenger, the Gunners went 26-12-0 across the Premier League's 38 matches, earning the nickname 'The Invincibles'. They were the first top-flight team to survive a whole league campaign without defeat since Preston North End in 1888-89.

What makes Arsenal's run remarkable is that it happened in the era of competitive spending, not a two-horse league. They beat the champions' total with 90 points and did it with a core of Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry and a back line anchored by Sol Campbell and Kolo Touré. The achievement is so rare that two decades later, 'Invincibles' still means one specific team.

Other undefeated campaigns

Perugia's 1978-79 season is the closest Italy has come: the Serie A club went 11-19-0, unbeaten but with a remarkable 19 draws — and still only finished second. Perugia proved that going undefeated does not automatically win the title; it just proves you are hard to beat.

In Spain, Real Madrid's 1931-32 campaign was unbeaten, and in Germany, Bayern Munich's 1986-87 and 2012-13 seasons came close but never flawless. Juventus's 2011-12 season was also unbeaten in Serie A (23-15-0). Unbeaten seasons are extraordinary; perfect ones do not exist.
